Teaching the teachers
Article Abstract:
University of Kent, England, Reader in Sociology Frank Furedi agrees teaching in universities is not consistent but he feels accreditation will not improve the standard of teaching. He fears the accreditation of all teachers will mean the loss of innovative teaching practices as it does not consider how academics learn through their research. UK Institute for Learning and Teaching Director of Accreditation Caroline Bucklow suggests accreditation will improve the standards of teaching in universities. It will also allow teachers to exchange information and support each other.

A question of morality
Article Abstract:
The UK government plans to ask questions about religious affiliations in the next national census, despite contravening the European Convention on Human Rights. Religion is a personal issue that could prove sensitive for some minority communities, but Jewish and other major religious groups support inclusion of the question. The data is ostensibly intended to be used for planning and social purposes, but the value of such information is highly questionable. People who refuse to answer the question are committing a criminal offence.
