Mourning Britain's new dawn
Article Abstract:
Winston Churchill died in 1965, and his death marks the end of the post war period in Britain. The war came to be seen as less special in the 1960s, and it also became apparent that the UK had lost power. The funeral of Winston Churchill involved an expression of mass patriotism. It also freed UK citizens of a view of the war which was over-optimistic, according to a contemporary observer, who noted the high cost on involvement in the war for the UK.

Article Abstract:
The UK political elite was not well equipped to tackle the problems facing the country in 1945. There was a need for modernising industry, training the work force, investing in infrastructure and reducing the balance of payments deficit. Compassion and a humanist education was not adequate for tackling these problems. There was too much reliance on committees which are slow to act, and this was true at all levels of political life in the UK in 1945.
