Private heads curb bias claim
Article Abstract:
Heads of private schools have moderated their claims that the United Kingdom's leading universities are discriminating against their pupils in favour of lower-quality students who originate from poorer backgrounds. A new survey conducted by the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference and the Girls' School Association into university admissions acknowledges that there is now "less evidence" of the complaints that arose from the results of the first, less comprehensive survey conducted in 2002. Instead, the survey warns that pupils from private schools are themselves causing universities to turn them away as a result of the narrowness of their choice of universities, which is based on transient popularity and peer group reputation.

Bristol 'proud' of state school pupil surge
Article Abstract:
Bristol University has responded to comments that it is discriminating against students from private-schools by saying that it is proud of its controversial access drive which has seen the number of students from state-schools at the university rise by a fifth in four years. The university noted that it had managed to increase participation by students from state-schools to 60% today from 49.3% in 1998, adding that it hoped to increase this percentage even further in order to more accurately reflect the make up of general society, where students from private-schools make up just 7% of the population.

Visa crisis harms UK, Blair told
Article Abstract:
The British Council has called on Prime Minister Tony Blair to take steps to ensure that the number of foreign students at universities in the UK remain at least at recent levels. The call comes as some universities report that they are missing their targets for foreign students, which they put down to stricter visa procedures and an increase in the cost of visas. Foreign students generate UKPd1.25 bil/yr for universities and are estimated to bring UKPd10.2 bil/yr to the country's economy.
