Ignoring climate will land us in hot water
Article Abstract:
Climate change is expected to be a big topic of discussion at the AAAS conference to be held in Denver, Colorado, with the United States likely to be the subject of much criticism from scientists. Mohamed El-Ashry, head of the Global Environment Facility, an United Nations agency charged with galvanising international action in the fight against ozone depletion, climate change, desertification and biodiversity threats, is one of the key speakers at the conference and he notes that it is very difficult to have a concerted global effort against climate change when the world's number one economy and polluter will not take part in the development of solutions.

Gloves off for 'thinking man's Michael Moore'
Article Abstract:
Paul Krugman, Princeton University economics professor and columnist for The New York Times, argues that the current Bush Administration in the US is a joke, guilty of "world-class mendacity", "crony capitalism" and of cynically exploiting the events of 9/11 for its own ends. He contends that under the Republicans, a coalition of the religious right and corporate insiders is trying to take over the American political system and notes that he awaits the time when the American people realise that their patriotism and good will has been abused.

Chilly climate freezes talent
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the impact that research bans and tough post-September 11 immigration controls could be having on academic research in the United States. It is suggested that the US might be experiencing a reverse of the traditional "brain drain", which has seen academics from around the world travel to the US to work, with the world's leading academics and researchers now steering clear of the US and looking elsewhere to conduct their work.
