Probing the great divide
Article Abstract:
Head of the UK's largest cancer charity, the Imperial Cancer Research Fund, Paul Nurse is one of the most celebrated biologists of his generation yet he once toyed with giving up science for philosophy. Nurse has been working on the cell cycle since the early 1970s and still spends half his time in the laboratory. He understands the frustrations of the experimental life, explaining that really satisfying moments are rare, but argues that the pain is worthwhile when the stakes are high. Cancer is now the UK's number one killer but Nurse believes that major improvements in treatment are still 30 years away.

Creating the citizen scientist
Article Abstract:
The UK Royal Society has emphasised the importance of involving the public in science in a report published in the 1980s. Science is promoted at school and there is a move to motivate the public to learn about science by giving ordinary people a voice to influence technical issues. This helps promote democracy and debate, as is shown by the Dutch experience. Denmark also seeks to promote science and is especially concerned about consensus on issues such as food technology and infertility treatment.
