Prosaic push to preserve Russia's poetic genius
Article Abstract:
The eighth and final volume in a facsimile series of the notebooks of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin is to be published in Apr 1998. The sets include drafts and copies of Pushkin's poems, sketches, expenses and daily appointments. The facsimiles will be of great value to Pushkin scholars, and will ensure that it is not necessary to seek access to the original notebooks, which are becoming very fragile. The money raised from their publication will be used to preserve extremely valuable books and papers in the Pushkinskii Dom in St Petersburg, Russia.

8.1% of professors are women
Article Abstract:
A survey of women in higher positions in United Kingdom universities has found that women are overtaking men at levels near the top. Women accounted for a fifth of readers, prinicipal lecturers and senior lecturers in 1997 compared to a sixth in 1995. Women accounted for 8.1% of the top level of professors in 1997 compared with 6.7% in 1995. Women are well represented in nursing and social studies, and far less well represented in dentistry, chemistry and agriculture. Mentoring schemes are among projects to tackle this problem.
