Prostitute myth has strong pull

Students at top universities in Russia who engage in casual prostitution are falling for the myth perpetuated by the film "Pretty Woman" that prostitution will offer them a ticket to a better life, according to a survey conducted by Shonda Werry, a US student studying international politics at Moscow State University. Werry's survey revealed that the women regard selling sex as an harmless way to meet men and improve their chances of leaving Russia for a more comfortable life elsewhere.

Former security staff land top posts in Russian government

A study by Olga Kryshtanovskaya, a leading researcher into post-Soviet Union power elites, reveals that four out of five political leaders and state administrators in Russia are active or former members of the KGB or successor security services. The study reports how President Vladimir Putin, a former KGB spy chief, was responsible for the increase in the number of security service appointments to key positions throughout Russia.

Russia set to introduce student loans to help boost quality
Article Abstract:
Russia is considering the introduction of a student loans system to help fund the higher education sector. Currently there are close to 6 million students in Russia and annual federal spending is GBP 4 billion, only hald the amount required to support the 600-plus state universities.
