Article Abstract:
The funding of university research in the United Kingdom is analysed and it is argued that the research assessment exercise of 2001 failed to take enough account of business-facing research and its value to the UK economy. It is contended that a new stream of funding for business-relevant research, as suggested by the Lambert review of business-university collaboration, is vital if the breadth of the university research base in the UK is not to narrow.

An analysis of the way in which scientific research undertaken by universities in the United Kingdom is evaluated in order to determine the distribution of funding. It is argued that, while the current system does have its merits, a radical rethink is required in order to free research from the grip of bureaucracy.
