Article Abstract:
Universities in England are reducing the number of PhD places available in their weaker departments, giving rise to fears of academic job losses as a result of a declining need for doctoral supervisors. Universities are making the move as a result of a decision by the Higher Education Funding Council for England to withdraw funding for doctoral students from departments that rate below four in the research assessment exercise.
