Re-establish centres of excellence
Article Abstract:
The Government should give serious consideration to the creation of a single type of organisation, such as University Hospital National Health Service (NHS) Trusts, with responsibility for training doctors, carrying out medical research, and providing clinical care. The introduction of the NHS internal market had a detrimental effect on teaching hospitals by destroying the arrangements under which the medical school and hospital helped each other with clinical care and teaching. A system in which hospitals and medical schools are legally separate entities benefits neither patients nor clinical academics.

We don't need more doctors...
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) is not easy to predict. There have been a number of mistaken forcasts as to levels of doctors that would be needed. A call was made in 1997 for more doctors, yet it is nurses who are in short supply. Nurses could tackle a number of problems which are usually dealt with by doctors. Pharmacists have expensive training yet their skills are often under-used once they graduate. There is a need for tackling the problems of the NHS labor market in a coordinated way.

The medics vs the academics
Article Abstract:
St Thomas's Hospital, London, England, is a famous teaching hospital which aims to teach medicine, carry out research, and provide high-quality patient care. These aims are ambitious and have been made more difficult by a number of factors. These factors include two different organizations being involved, the medical school and health service trust, as well as major changes being implemented as part of a wider healthcare reform in the UK. Theres is a need for more debate on these issues.
