There are over 100 universities in Ireland and Britain, but there are other projects to found universities which never materialised. Schemes for universities in the 17th century included a plan for London, Bristol, Ludlow, and Shrewsbury. The Earl of Derby planned a university for the Isle of Man, but he was beheaded, and the plan never came to fruition. Fraserburgh is one of the lost Scottish universities. Some projects initially failed, but universities were later set up in those locations, such as Reading, England.

Forget dreaming spires and face up to reality
Article Abstract:
The United Kingdom Labour government's idea for a foundation degree seems to be another way to get people into higher education. In reality its success seems unlikely unless it offers to those who do not want to go to university something they really want.

A capital way to stretch research and resources

Annual grants to United Kingdom universities for research are dependent on the government, but an endowment to institutions would have benefits. The payment would give universities more independence to make their own decisions.
