'Religion should not provide the basis for ethics.' Discuss
Article Abstract:
The professor of anatomy and developmental biology at University College London and the bishop of Oxford provide arguments around the contention that religion should not provide the basis for ethics ahead of a debate based around the same subject to be held at the National Portrait Gallery on 19 March 2004. The scientist argues that ethical decisions should be based on humanism and democratic principles while the bishop acknowledges that religion does not provide the only basis for ethics and that all people, whether religious or not, have the ability to make rational moral judgements.

Article Abstract:
Science is seen as an attempt to explain phenomena in as simple a way as possible. Science and technology are often confused, although the two did not become linked until the 19th century. A Greek, Thales of Miletos, is credited with being the first scientist in 600 BC. Christianity is thought to have aided the development in science in the West by its emphasis on discussion.

Article Abstract:
An analysis of the changing depictions of the crucifixion of Christ throughout history. The earliest surviving depictions of the crucifixion depict Christ as a victorious saviour, in charge of his destiny and winning the salvation of humanity, whereas modern depictions of the crucifixion portray much starker, cruel images of a suffering God.
