Article Abstract:

Anglia Polytechnic University vice chancellor Mike Malone Lee explains that higher education (HE) in East Anglia must be moved out into the community because the population is reluctant to travel. East Anglia has around 50,000 full-time students in HE but Higher Education Statistics Agency figures show that the region attracts just 17,119 students, the second lowest number in the UK. HE provision outside Cambridge University, the University of East Anglia and Essex University is highly vocational and frequently part time. Peterborough, England, should have its own university by 1998.

Article Abstract:

Mike Fitzgerald's appointment as vice-chancellor of Thames Valley University (TVU) in 1991 was seen as popular and dynamic yet staff were said to be overjoyed when he announced his resignation on Nov. 12, 1998. Fitzgerald's resignation followed a damning report by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), called in by TVU governors at the end of 1997 in response to press reports of dumbing down. The QAA inspectors' report criticised the breakdown of relations between management and staff and questioned the ability of many of TVU's students to benefit from higher education.
