Reform teeters on the brink
Article Abstract:
Spanish universities have greater autonomy to decide on courses to offer, and this has helped universities to modernise their curricula. Critics argue that coherence has sometimes been lacking and there has not been enough funding to implement changes effectively. The University of Valencia has carried out a survey of the reforms and a report from the university has made recommendations such as reducing the amount of work that students are expected to do so they can complete courses within four years.

Spanish regions complete takeover
Article Abstract:
The remaining five Spanish regions have taken on financial and political responsibilities for universities, completing the decentralisation process. The central government now allocates the 17 regional governments a lump sum meaning increased internal financial autonomy for universities. Universities are expected to improve, and some will excel, depending on the introduction of efficient management structures.
