Russians call for death penalty as murders rise
Article Abstract:
Russian academics have called for the death penalty to be reinstated following a spate of murders which, according to Moscow police, has seen at least eight professors and researchers found dead in suspicious circumstances over the last two years. Mikhail Kodin, vice-president of the Russian Academy of Social Science, acknowledges that it is unlikely that scientists are being deliberately targeted but notes that the restoration of the death penalty is needed to deal with the growth of lawlessness that has sprung up as a result of the increasing gulf between rich and poor people in Russia.
