Sars hits Chinese intake
Article Abstract:
Thousands of Chinese students who have had the English-language tests cancelled as a result of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) crisis could be forced to defer taking up their places at UK universities unless universities in the UK take over the process, according to a warning from the British Council. Around 12,000 students/month would normally take the International Language Testing System examinations at British Council centres in China, all of whom are now having to wait for a ban on large public gatherings, which was introduced to stop the spread of the disease, to be lifted before they can take their exams.

UK keeps close eye on Sars hotspots
Article Abstract:
The UK is making preparations for any possible evacuation of hundreds of British academics and students from universities in China as a result of fears concerning the severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) virus. With many university campuses in China closed in order to contain the spread of the virus, the British Council has asked university authorities in China to make sure that all of their UK students have registered with the British Embassy so that they can be issued with any new advice in as expeditious a manner as is possible. To date, there has been no general call for UK students to return home.
