Issues relating to the censorship of student newspapers in the United States by college authorities and the right to freedom of speech are examined in the light of the court case which has resulted from the decision taken three years ago by Patricia Carter, dean of Governors State University in Illinois, to ban publication of the university's newspaper, the Innovator, until the contents of the paper could be approved by either herself or a designated school official.

Issues relating to the work being done by Roger Groot, professor of law at Washington and Lee University, and his students in an effort to keep John Lee Malvo - who, with his accomplice John Allen Muhammad, is suspected of the murder of 14 people and the wounding of an additional five in the greater Washington area in the autumn of 2002 - off death row. Malvo, who was 17 when arrested, could face the death penalty if he is found guilty.
