Scottish history comes back haem
Article Abstract:
Edinburgh University is making an effort to overcome the perception that it has no long term commitment to Scottish studies by seeking to improve connections with Scottish schools and increase the intake of Scottish students. Over the last two decades the number of Scottish students has fallen from 70% to 46% of the university's total students. The university offers a four year degree course in Scottish studies and in 1992 120 students read Scottish history an increase of 46% of which 50% were Scottish students. This increase has been attributed to Modern Scottish history being adopted as a compulsory element of the Standard grade history exam which students sit at 15, which in turn has led to Scottish options being included for the Higher history exam.

Cloning a golden fleece
Article Abstract:
PPL Therapeutics managing director Ron James stresses that his company's objectives are totally different from those of the Roslin Institute whose technology it commercialises. James, an industrial chemist turned venture capitalist, explains that PPL scientists only carry out work that is commercially relevant. He points out that PPL has built on the Roslin scientists' research into the cell nucleus transfer technology that led to the cloning of Dolly the sheep, in order to create therapeutic proteins for use in treating such conditions as cystic fibrosis and deep vein thrombosis.
