'Screen medics' mental health'
Article Abstract:
The Royal College of Psychiatrists, which has set up a working party to investigate the problem of identifying and dealing with mental illness in universities, looks set to call for the establishment of a more uniform system for screening for depression at the start of medical degrees. At present medical schools require their students to declare if they are suffering from any mental illness, however the Council of Heads of Medical Schools acknowledges that many students do not do so for fear that it could count against them on their applications. The call for the introduction of screening is likely to be made in the light of concerns that many trainee doctors have hidden mental health problems that could pose risks to their patients.
