Seeing eye to eye
Article Abstract:
Foreign students in the United Kingdom are confronted with a variety of problems which can be partly tackled through making staff more sensitive to cultural differences. Foreign students may be thought rude due to using polite terms like 'please' in a different way to native students, they may find their dietary needs are not met, and they may perceive native students as unfriendly. Ethnocentrism and lack of awareness of different cultures may mean native students do not attempt to involve foreign students in their social life in appropriate ways, for example speaking only of popular United Kingdom culture, rather than broader topics which would allow people from outside this culture to become involved.

Insights into seeing
Article Abstract:
Perception of colour involves an interaction between the nervous system and what is perceived, and colour can be desribed as an investion of the brain. Colour is perceived through rods in dim light, and cones in daylight. There are parallels between modern conceptions of colour perception and those set out by Thomas Young in the early 19th century. There has been progress in understanding how we perceive colour, but there are still areas which are not understood, such as how the optic nerve encodes visual stimuli, and how the brain decodes stimuli.

Seeing the white
Article Abstract:
The idea of white studies may initially appear off, but there are good reasons for taking this idea seriously. The lack of white studies when black studies courses have become common could reflect a view that being white is normal and being black is odd. Whiteness can be understood better if it is not taken for granted. There is a danger that white studies could lead to the labeling of anything white as bad, and this should be avoided, while recognising white colonialism and fascism.
