Loitering with intent to reform
Article Abstract:
Reforms are planned for the United Kingdom police force at a time of crisis in its relationship with the general public, and, despite opposition from within the force, much change has already been undertaken. The force has already tackled difficult areas such as racial discrimination within the police, and there has been a move away from the isolation which characterised the years when Margaret Thatcher was prime minister. Police culture tends to respond slowly to change. It remains to be seen whether changes planned for autumn 1993 will improve relations between the police and public.

A career ain't the half of it
Article Abstract:
There are problems for a woman academic who wishes to have children, and the decision may involve her having to sacrifice her career. This is a problem for a woman who has spent many years in obtaining qualifications and a tenured post. The sacrifice may appear too great, but the problem can be avoided if the husband is prepared to share childcare equally with the wife. Some people may see such sharing as something that is confined to academic circles, yet couples who share these tasks can be found in a wide range of jobs.

Bars on the doors
Article Abstract:
A survey reveals that women in the public sector still see male attitudes preventing them from reaching top positions. Only 4% of professors in British universities are female. Equal opportunity statements are not perceived as helpful. To redress the balance it is suggested that employers look at networks, the decision process and selection, amongst other factors.
