Heirs to a contested past
Article Abstract:
Research into the history of the Third Reich inevitably brings involvement in political conflicts, according to Hans Mommsen, who specialises in the Weimar Republic and Third Reich. He first came to public attention as one of a new generation of historians who expressed opposition to the widely held view that National Socialism was attributable only to Hitler and a small number of very committed SS members. His attempts to assess the wider circumstances which allowed the Nazis to seize power have now become widely accepted.

Uneasy welcome for auditors
Article Abstract:
In Feb 1993 Oxford University was visited by auditors from the Higher Education Quality Council, the first time the university had had its academic work assessed from outside. The auditors were there to see the quality mechanisms in operation and the standards they wish to meet. Teaching quality will be assessed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England at a later date.
