Article Abstract:
The author of the book "Ganesha: Lord of Obstacles, Lord of Beginnings" describes how Hindu's, angered by the discussion of the deity's sexuality contained within a chapter in the book, sent him death threats and succeeded in getting the book effectively banned in India. He notes that while the spectre of book banning and demands for public apologies and retractions sends waves of anxiety through scholars, he has been fortunate in that the academic community in which he resides has stood by him and remains committed to academic freedom.
