A remedy for trust and influence; how medical schools have fared under health service reforms
Article Abstract:
Most of the medical schools attached to NHS trusts are pleased with the increased decision-making power they have acquired. Teaching hospitals still face problems, particularly those with large financial deficits and those based in London. There are seen to be too many hospitals in London for the number of patients, although many teaching hospitals there have specialist research functions. Ways of dealing with the London problem are being looked at, as is a possible increase in medical student.

Article Abstract:
John Patten, the Secretary of State for Education, has told university vice-chancellors that they can remedy the lack of basic skills in new entrants to universities if they choose. He reminded them that unsuitable applicants can be rejected, and the forthcoming review of English in the National Curriculum would be a good opportunity. Some academics are concerned about poor mathematical skills and that they have to increase numbers because of new funding agreements.

The Tomlinson report; London medical education
Article Abstract:
The Tomlinson report on London medical education was expected to recommend the closure of some of the capital's teaching hospitals. London has nine undergraduate and three postgraduate schools of medicine. Teaching and financial resources generated by the closures would move to doctors surgeries and community care.
