Article Abstract:
An analysis of the history and relationship between David King, chief scientific adviser to the prime minister of the United Kingdom and head of the government's Office of Science and Technology, and Ian Gibson, Labour MP for Norwich North and chairman of the House of Commons select committee for science and technology, and their fight for the future of British science. King and Gibson have an history dating back to the early 1970s, when they were rival trade union activists, and now face each other again, fighting for British science from different positions.

Animal testing 'not vital'
Article Abstract:
Critics of scientific animal testing, like the Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research and the Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments (FRAME), say the government has not done enough to encourage alternative research methods. Critics say the government should abandon a defensive pro-vivisection stance and begin looking for viable alternatives which do exist.

The UK Government's white paper "Excellence and Opportunity" proposes the establishment of a 4 million pounds sterling fellowship scheme to attract top scientists with high salaries, but scientists say that it will not stop the brain drain.
