Somerville's summer of discontent
Article Abstract:
Somerville College, Oxford University, is deciding whether to become mixed after 113 years as a female college. Many of the students and former students are against the proposal, and if the decision goes against them they say the battle will continue in the High Court. Oxford University's undergraduates are 40% female, as are 12% of the dons. The argument is linked to discussion as to whether women perform better in a single sex educational environment.

Penned and panned
Article Abstract:
A new five volume Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature is being prepared. It is expected to be finished in the mid 1990's and will feature writers from the year 600 to 1985. The volume covering the 20th century will include poets and playwrights as well as novelists, and there is controversy over whether some writers merit inclusion. The 18th century volume will contain references to 300 more women writers than the previous one.
