Soundbites not specialists speak most loudly
Article Abstract:
Academic specialists may disagree over their understanding of the causes of the political turmoil in Asia, but they share a common irritation at the way events in countries like Indonesia, India and Pakistan have been represented by the media. Understanding is being obscured by the focus on sensationalism and violence. Informed specialists should be sought who are able to give detailed analyses of events and more use should be made of the expertise to be found in British universities.
