Spit and say 'phew! lacquer.' (religious rituals of ancient China)(China supplement)
Article Abstract:
Archaeological excavations in China have revealed new information on the religion of classical Chinese civilisation in the Confucius-dominated period of around 400-200BC. Confucius is traditionally perceived as being a religious sceptic who promoted the idea that spirits and demons should be kept at a distance. Manuscripts excavated from ancient burial sites provide evidence that religious practice was widespread, although the manuscripts are not the sort traditionally maintained by priests. Ancient medical manuscripts also incorporate religious material.

Ancient foundation courses
Article Abstract:
Teaching of classics in schools has been declining since the late 1950s. There were only 1,000 full-time teachers of classics in sixth form colleges and maintained secondary schools by 1992, compared to 3,400 in 1984. However, the subject can still do well at university level, according to statistics compiled by the Council of University Classics Departments.
