Staff at risk in RAE run-up
Article Abstract:
Universities in the UK are moving to either make weak researchers redundant or transfer them to teaching-only positions in order to improve their scores in the planned 2008 research assessment exercise (RAE), according to the Association of University Teachers. This monoeuvring among institutions ahead of the next RAE is expected to add to a growing backlash against the exercise, which members of the House of Commons science and technology committee have already called to be abandoned.

Fixed but insecure
Article Abstract:
While researchers on fixed-term contracts account for around 30% of the academic-related workforce of universities in the United Kingdom, the majority feel excluded and marginalised from academic life. This situation needs to change if contracts researchers are to continue to contribute to the research that is so important for academic institutions.
