Sticky moments with a critical mass
Article Abstract:
A graphic design lecturer based at the University of Bath describes how he developed a whole new take on assessment after being left in the lurch with over 100 first and third-year design students. The new take on the assessment involved getting the first-year students to assess the work of the third-year students, giving the third-years a view on their work that differed from that usually given to them by their usual tutor and giving the first-years a glimpse into how their course would progress, thereby enabling them to better fit everything into place.

Students get personal
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the impending introduction of personal development planning in colleges and universities in the United Kingdom are examined from the point of view that student-learning agreements, which give students the opportunity to customise assessment and learning without compromising standards, are the way forward for education. It is acknowledged that in order to work, the concept of student-learning agreements would need to be adapted to fit the requirements of different modules, students, and university regulations and culture.

...think designers are undervalued
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the value of design in the light of the row that has erupted following University College London's decision to invest UKPd600,000 in the creation of a new logo. It is contended that designers are, in general, not properly appreciated, that design is a valuable form of communication and that good design is among an organisation's intangible financial assets.
