'The fuss over graduate numbers... is about Oxford losing money on undergraduate teaching and hoping to turn a profit on taught masters degrees'
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to the suggestion that Oxford University should emulate the way in which Ivy League universities work and destroy its colleges and reconstruct its student body on the basis of one-third undergraduates to two-thirds graduates is examined. It is argued that such a suggestion for the restructuring of Oxford is pure fantasy and that what Oxford should learn from Ivy League universities is lessons about donations and fees, not management style and graduate numbers.

Spires aspire to Ivy League
Article Abstract:
Issues relating to Oxford University's restructuring proposals, which include reducing undergraduate numbers and focusing more on postgraduates, are examined. It is argued that in the light of the plans to restructure the whole university sector in the UK and separate strong research universities from second string ones, Oxford needs to restructure its governance structures if is not to be held back.
