Subjective judgement in the ranks
Article Abstract:
Russian university league tables use criteria such as research, resources, qualifications of staff, laboratory equipment, and subsequent performance of students. Institutions at the bottom of the league are not denied funding and are not under threat of being closed. Critics of the tables argue that measuring universities' strengths is not a simple task, and the publication of these tables is not helpful. They stress that accurate statistics are not easy to achieve until there is greater stability in Russia.

Modern English breaks stranglehold of Soviets
Article Abstract:
Teaching English in the former Soviet Union under the previous government was restricted to the use of old-fashioned texts, with no direct contract with modern British media or native speakers being permitted. Russian universities are now taking a new approach, teaching British cultural studies in a much more up to date and innovative way. Students are spending much more time studying British culture, moving away from simply looking at English grammar in great detail.

Russian windows may close
Article Abstract:
Annual tuition fees and living costs at Russian Universities are expected to rise significantly, as a result of greater economic stability and socio-economic improvements. Annual tuition costs currently stand at between 2,000-3,000 pounds sterling. The low costs have attracted increasing numbers of foreign students, which over the last 12 months rose to 60,000. Foreign students include those from Britain, the west, and the developing world.
