Talented artists or just con artists?
Article Abstract:
Mixed views have been expressed about the 13 third-year fine art students from Leeds University, England, who obtained a grant of 1,000 pounds sterling from their students' union, along with a considerable sum in sponsorship, apparently for an artistic expedition to Spain. In fact, they did not go to Spain at all, but to Scarborough, England. Some observers believe that this was a very commendable example of performance art, while others claim that the exercise lacked intrinsic interest.

How cheap money can build residences
Article Abstract:
Universities and colleges have been using the government-funded Business Expansion Scheme (BES) to finance the acquisition of student residences. The scheme allowed institutions to set up a company to sell accommodation to students, and has been compared to a loan which includes the capital and interest. The BES normally lasts for five years. The universities of Lancaster, Surrey and East Anglia have built new accommodation under the scheme. It has been decided to end the scheme.

A level playing field?
Article Abstract:
The UK examination system may be changed if proposals by Ron Dearing are accepted. Dearing argues for an end to the lack of balance between vocational and academic qualifications. He argues that academic standards for some Advanced Level (A Level) examinations should be raised, and GNVQs should be called applied A Levels. He also argues for children to be able to study some units from university courses while they are at school, helping them when they reach university.
