Article Abstract:

Otago Polytechnic, Dunedin, New Zealand, Staff Development Coordinator Maxine Alterio has developed a method of formalised storytelling on a one-to-one basis. It has been used in teaching practice to help students understand their actions and feelings over particular incidents. Alterio recommends listeners are not allowed to comment whilst being told the story, which is recorded. At a second meeting the story teller and listener discusses the story. Storytelling can be used for groups of people but Alterio points out the storyteller must remain the focus of the exercise.

Research into the high incidence of divorce amongst male teachers in US secondary schools and universities is discussed. Male US teachers in the study had a much higher chance of divorce and subsequently not remarrying than men generally.
