Ten-year v tenure: do academics need MOTs?
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the contention that academics should not be employed on an absolute tenure but on the basis of fixed-term contracts. It is argued that the absolute tenure system is flawed, resulting in academics who are not producing top-quality research holding on to jobs that would be better filled by other people, but that the idea that academics should only be employed on three-year contracts is also problematic as it would promote a short-termism that would be bad for research. It is suggested that a happy medium would be to review tenure once every decade or so.
