Professor of Innovation Studies Jennifer Tann has been researching the behaviour of star performers within the business environment. She suggests managers should discover the members of their companies who are the showing outstanding initiative and utilize their abilities to introduce policy change. Tann is also looking at how entrepreneurial leaders work well in starting a business but once the firm is established can be a hinderance to its further progression. Tann's research is paid for by the Economic and Social Research Council. She works at Birmingham University, England

Esther Sternberg, a programme director at the National Institute of Mental Health in Washington DC, recalls that she was not really taken seriously when she began to research the impact of serotonin on the immune system. She later tested a potential arthritis drug on two strains of rat, and this led her to realize that the brain and immune system do communicate. If there is a breakdown in communication, the consequences can be fatal.
