The great unwashed
Article Abstract:
Richard Lacey has carried out research on the sterilization of skin. He has found that washing with soap or alcohol can increase the number of staphylococcus bacteria because fatty acids which limit their growth are removed. This means that swabbing with alcohol for injections is bad practice. His recommendations have not been taken up until the 1990s though he published his findings in 1968. He is also concerned that mad cow disease could be contracted by humans and that irradation of food could be dangerous.

Loss of a crop of scientists
Article Abstract:
Genetic engineering, particularly when related to agriculture, would be of great use to the predominantly farming areas of Africa. There are very few facilities available and graduates are not attracted to this area of study due to the lack of investment. African researchers in biotechnology tend to be working on dealing with problems rather than eliminating the causes. The lack of facilities tends to mean research is only done at a basic level which is not attractive to many graduates.
