Wellcome to the ivy league
Article Abstract:
PhD students supported by the Wellcome Trust have received a premium over the rate paid by the largest funder of biomedical PhDs, the Medical Research Council, since 1987. Wellcome's scientific programme manager for basic and veterinary sciences Patricia Chisholm explains that, as an elite research institution, the trust only wants to support high-class people who will become researchers. Wellcome's PhD students are concentrated in top-rated research departments supported by the trust, leading to a tendency for them to be in a small number of 'ivy league' institutions.

Gene blues for scientists
Article Abstract:
The European Community (EC) directive permitting EC regulators to grant licences for release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) anywhere in the Community, including the UK, is effective from Autumn 1992. Following principles embodied in the 1990 Environmental Protection Act, British law will require producers of GMOs to prepare and defend an Environmental Impact Assessment of any proposals and pay for any environmental damage. Sub-clauses make provision for local approval in environments where GMOs may behave differently to the originating country.
