The race to map human life
Article Abstract:
DNA research scientist James D. Watson believes his work on the human genome project in Washington DC was highly valuable, particularly as several disease-causing genes were identified. Watson was surprised by the research that demonstrated how humans and insects share fundamental developmental pathways. Watson did not approve of the gene sequence patenting activities of the National Insitutes of Health and so left the project. Watson's initial research into DNA was aided by the X-ray pictures taken by inorganic chemist Rosalind Franklin, with Watson believing she had the capability to develop the DNA research herself.
