The startling rise of 'pseudo universities'
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the growth of "for-profits" or "proprietary" universities which, it is claimed, are gaining credibility and are threatening some traditional institutions. Philip Altbach, professor of higher education at Boston College, Massachusetts, suggests that the lower-rung colleges that covet the same mass market as the for profit institutions face the greatest threat but, he contends, the for-profits institutions are really "pseudo-universities" that do a good job in niche markets catering for intellectually narrow interests, but that a real university is a place of inquiry where a range of degrees is offered, teaching students to ask questions.

John Seely Brown, a leading member of the Silicon Valley digerati, argues that many in the computer and high-tech industries forget the social context of the technology they are developing and neglect their users, instead getting hung-up on the supply side of pedagogy. He argues that while technology will help transform higher education, the traditional social and intellectual dimensions of the university campus will endure as the university campus offers an unparalleled chance to meet and mingle with people from all walks of life and from a wide variety of intellectual disciplines.

Issues relating to how Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), went about transforming the college into an academic powerhouse by recruiting chess champions and forsaking football. Under the guidance of Hrabowski, who took charge of the college in 1992, UMBC has blossomed from a comparative backwater, increasing its research funding to US$70 mil from under US$10 mil, more than doubling its number of PhD students to 70, and garnering a reputation as an hothouse for scientific innovation.
