Third chance for access exam
Article Abstract:
Portuguese students were disappointed by a government ruling which will allow them to take the standardized entrance exam for higher education because they want the test abolished. Education minister Diamantino Durao responded to months of student protests and campus violence by denying allegations that the test is unfair and often incorrect. Students say they will refuse a third attempt at the test because it discriminates against students from certain regions and economic backgrounds. Many members of the Portuguese parliament agree the test is riddled with errors. Students who fail the test cannot attend public universities.

On your marks for changes in the exam system
Article Abstract:
The almost universal use of anonymous marking in higher education has virtually eliminated allegations of racial or sexual discrimination in assessed work, but many anonymous marking systems have serious shortcomings. The use of unique numbers, frequently students' matriculation or registration numbers, to label examination scripts and course papers is open to abuse since a number of people generally hold lists of names and numbers. Students should be given a unique number each time an examination is taken or a piece of course work submitted, and names should never be revealed at examination boards.

Thirteen ways to treat an external examiner
Article Abstract:
The task of external examiners is far more difficult if they are treated inconsiderately by the university they acting as examiner for. Problems may arise if draft copies of exam papers are incomplete and contain errors. Giving an examiner little time to meet a deadline creates undue pressure. Lack of comments on students' work, and having a complex marking scheme can also create problems. Mistakes with arithmetic can lead to a lot of unnecessary work for external examiners who then have to check all calculations.
