Transfer market block
Article Abstract:
Funding councils want to avoid a repetition of 1995's academic transfer market, although research from the Higher Education Funding Council for England will show that the transfer market was not as active as suggested. HEFCE head of policy Bahram Bekhradnia, wants to ensure that institutions doe not behave tactically in building up departments for the research assessment exercise. Chief executive of the HEFCE, Brian Fender, believes that researchers have improved quality and institutions have improved the management of research and funding bodies.

On the campaign trail with political studies
Article Abstract:
Fewer undergraduates are undertaking single-honours politics degrees in both the US and UK, although interest remains high in the UK in courses combining politics with another discipline. Political studies should encompass excluded groups rather than focus on the Houses of Parliament, claim some academics. The Political Studies Association of the UK has a different philosophy and goals to the American Political Science Association, with the US association more focused on empirical political research as opposed to the theoretical.

V-cs' pay packages hit six figures
Article Abstract:
UK vice-chancellors of universities are often receiving pay of over 100,000 pounds sterling. The level of detail provided by academic institutions varies considerabley, making it difficult to compare pay. Other academics may receive higher pay than vice-chancellors, with eleven staff members paid over 100,000 pounds and three paid more than 120,000 pounds. The figure could be higher since not all salary levels are declared. University professors, meanwhile, have found their pay under pressure.
