U.K. academe fights to retain young stars
Article Abstract:
Higher Education Statistics Agency statistics for 2004-2005 reveal that each year, more than 9,000 researchers leave their universities, but only about 1,000 move to another U.K. institution and almost 600 go into U.K. industry. The flexibility and appeal of higher education research does attract many, but universities often do not offer young academics the right support.

Brown urges rise in spend on sector
Article Abstract:
Chancellor Gordon Brown has said that the UK must increase spending on higher education and has hinted that a rise in top-up fees may offer a way to boost university income. The Chancellor was speaking at the launch of a Centre for European Reform (CER) pamphlet, The Future of European Universities: Renaisance or Decay?

Ye olde desktop project
Article Abstract:
An overview of the Early English Books Online project. The project aims to digitize and make available online every book published in English before 1700. To date about 125,000 books are available through the project.
