Virtue from necessity
Article Abstract:
The vice-chancellor of Loughborough University analyses the way in which university funding is changing and apparently becoming more transparent and examines the challenges that changes to the funding system pose. It is suggested that rather than being damaging to the operations of an university, it may actually be beneficial, in the long term, if they do not get the level of funding they require for the Higher Education Funding Council for England as it will force them to look to other sources of income, thereby reducing their dependence of a single source of money.

Students: use fees for books not pay
Article Abstract:
A survey of students in the UK has found that only 12% of students believe that universities should use some of the funds raised through the introduction of top-up fees in 2006 to increase the wages and motivation of staff. Instead, 30% of students believe the money should be invested in campus security, while 31% believe the money should be invested in university libraries.
