Wary Britons resist union sales pitch
Article Abstract:
An analysis of how the Government could try to overcome traditional British conservatism and communicate the benefits of membership of the European Union. Academics differ in their views of what the most important issues that need to be faced are, whether it is the issue of the European Constitution or joining the euro, but all seem to agree that the Government needs to address the matter more forcefully and enter into serious public debate about the issues.

The might of the military tendency
Article Abstract:
In the light of the publication in December 2005 of his book "Warfare State: Britain 1920-1970", David Edgerton, professor of the history of science and technology at Imperial College London, analyses the role of warfare in the development of Britain in the 20th-century. Edgerton contends that the role of warfare in Britain has been largely ignored and that warfare has been at least as important to the UK as the development of the welfare state.
