'We've no jobs. Education is our only hope'
Article Abstract:
Palestinian students in the UK are struggling to complete their studies as financial support falters due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Raed Almobayed, a medical student at Southampton University, is used as an example. When he began his course in 1998, his father, who ran a development business in Gaza City, believed that he would be able to cover his son's costs. Following the start of the intifada in September 2002 and the Israeli response of curfews, Almobayed's father was no longer able to send his son money and he has had to resort to fundraising in order to continue his education. Anoush Ehteshami, professor of international studies at the University of Durham, believes that with education in the Palestinian territories virtually at a standstill, the British role is even more important if a dysfunctional society with shortages of properly trained people in key areas is not to develop.

Free your minds to see benefits of free trade
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the way in which senior academics and politicians have lined up with anti-globalisation groups to oppose the General Agreement in Trade on Services (Gats), which is, in principal, applicable to higher education. It is argued that what these protesters need to realise is that, from a consumer point of view, higher education is a commodity and that Gats actually offers advantages to everybody.
