When heritage becomes history
Article Abstract:
Ethnic groups often use the destruction of historial monuments as a strategy in disputes because it leaves the other side feeling devastated, as part of their history is lost. A feature of ethnic cleansing is to destroy an ethnic group's history. Academics can have a role in helping to keep historical buildings safe. The Blue Shield Commission has been established to help reduce the level of damage to historial sites. Buddhist statues have been saved by the Taleban in Afghanistan but in Kosovo and Bosnia troops have destroyed several monuments.
