The new governing body of further education colleges, the Further Education Funding Council, has decided to operate an inspection programme. Funding will be linked to the quality of courses on offer so the inspectorate will need to make sure standards are maintained or enhanced. There will be 60 full-time and thirty part-time inspectors who will come from a variety of commercial as well as academic backgrounds.

An analysis of the possibility of introducing a system similar to the US SATs system in the United Kingdom. It is suggested that such a system could help identify students whose academic potential is not reflected in exam results and, in order to help such students and widen access to universities, such a system should at least be trialled.

Issues concerning plagiarism of university students are discussed, with focus on a proposal to change students' assessment procedures to examine the ways they acquire professional skills rather than the quantity of information they accumulate.
