Whitehall's superconductor
Article Abstract:
The British government's new Chief Scientific Adviser Robert May argues that the same basic process can be used to examine the best way of translating Britain's science base into industrial strength, as is used to try to understand superconductivity. May greatly enjoyed the training that allowed him to work on one thing one day and a different thing the next which he received at the University of Sydney, Australia, in the 1950s. May, who has held a chair in ecology as well as one in theoretical physics, does not feel that he is abandoning an interesting career by moving into administration.

Nigeria slides back into poverty
Article Abstract:
Nigeria's higher education system expanded 20 years ago as a result of oil revenue and demand for skilled workers. Expansion of universities meant that student numbers doubled every few years. Many expatriate staff have left Nigeria, and high inflation plus currency devaluation have led to poorer resources. Research by the World Bank revealed that administration costs are high and that resources could benefit from better management.

Tribal conflicts; the current split in Nigeria's universities
Article Abstract:
The Nigerian higher education system is dominated by the different cultures within the country. Most northern states are Muslim and the southern area Christian. To avoid discrimination against the north all universities take in students from all areas and use a quota system. Higher education expanded in the 1980's, funded by oil, but Nigeria now has a larger network of colleges than it can support.
