Women's archive under threat
Article Abstract:
The Fawcett Library, housed since 1977 in the City of London Polytechnic, is the UK's main archive for women's history but it is in serious financial trouble. The Polytechnic's chief librarian David Doughan says the Fawcett Library's situation is a little better than most other universities' archives. It is named after Millicent Fawcett, the leader of the National Union of Women's Suffrage Society. It is expected to run out of space within two years, being unable to weed out old material as can undergraduate libraries.

A project to test the feasibility of a fully electronic library has begun at the De Montfort University in the UK. It is hoped it will be available within five years, and is known as Elinor. Staff and students will be able to access any text simultaneously at any time, including illustrations and sound. The project is jointly funded by the university, IBM and the British Library. Pricing and copyright are amongst the issues to be resolved during the initial stages of Elinor.

A bitter cuppa for lecturers
Article Abstract:
Students and teachers at German universities have been involved in a lot of unrest over the interpretation of teaching standards and performance. Some teachers have been accused of teaching fraud by student groups because they have allegedly created bogus timetables. Representatives from the professional association of professors argue that most professors are fulfilling their role within the academic community.
